Sonia Gandhi : Born in 1946. place: Turin, Italy, as Sonia Maino.
Sonia met Rajiv Gandhi ( son of late Indira Gandhi) in 1965 when they were studying in Cambridge, England.
They were married in the year1968 and settled in India.
Sonia Gandhi, who became an Indian citizen in 1983, was close to her mother-in-law, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and toured with her on many trips throughout India.
In 1984, when Indira Gandhi was assassinated, her husband became the prime minister of India. Sonia Gandhi remained in the background without any active interest in Indian politics.
When Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated 1991, she continued to stay away from politicals. She finally entered the politics in 1998, campaigning for Congress party.
Sonia Gandhi played a key role in the success of Congress party's victory and was soon elected head of the party.
