Endurance race training

In a track event, athletes have to think on their feet as it makes all the difference between winning and losing.

Any track event requires a training program to be charted out to suit the needs of the athlete.  It should keep in mind several factors like gender, age, strengths and weaknesses to name a few.

The training plan is to be based on phases and can last about 6 cycles or phases.  Training has to increase gradually every week from easy, medium to hard.  The concluding training phase would comprise active recovery and tests to monitor the training.

The trainer would have to build up the athlete to a level of fitness. He should also help build a higher level of fitness.  There should be a concentration on strength development, endurance and basic technique.  The athlete should be prepared for the main competition.

For the 800 meter track event, the athlete should apply a strategy.  One, it has been discovered that runners at the break line are at a disadvantage as they have to run wide. Hence, they should try to run a diagonal straight line to minimize the extra distance they have to cover.  Two, they should obtain a fast, early pace.  Three, while passing one must gain position on the outside shoulder of the runner ahead.  Four, one must be wary of becoming boxed in, and five, the most important, the runner must avoid any interruption in pace & keep going.

 One must make a mental note of an important element of a middle distance race is the kick, a sprint for the finish line during the final lap.
