Kids being kids shy away
from learning and doing homework, both of which are very important.
Doing homework is always considered a drudge, but it is an essential
part of study skills. Not only does it reinforce whatever has been
learnt in the class, but it also helps to develop the child’s mind.
Homework work enhances the memory and inculcates a sense of independence
in the child. It creates a sense of responsibility and a sense of pride
for having achieved. The age-old adage of all work and no play still
holds good. In order to alleviate the burden of homework, the child
should be encouraged to indulge in sports, music or other forms of art.
These tend to enhance the performance in school as the child becomes
more versatile. So, flexibility in learning and homework schedules is a
must.
If the child is allotted a nice, quiet and well-lit space to work in, it
is easier to study. Distractions like the television and the telephone
must be kept to a minimum. Children always manage to find an excuse to
stop work. It is sensible to see that whatever they require in the form
of stationery supplies is available close at hand. Kids ape adults, so
let them see you read, write and do things which require effort. They
easily fall into the same groove. The golden rule is to never make a
rule for them if you yourself cannot follow it. You just cannot be an
exception to the rule just because you are a grown up. That just does
not wash. Talking with kids and imparting information without appearing
pedantic makes them good listeners. Always make time for the kids when
they want to talk about something. They are curious by nature and this
is the best way that they can learn. Their curiosity must never be
curbed. Children should be encouraged to find out more about something
that interests them.
Encourage the kids to talk about what they did in school, what was
discussed and what games they played. This way they feel important and
look forward to discussing things with you. Make the sessions lively and
give them information about your work. It helps to make them feel grown
up. Pay attention to the grades the kids receive and strengthen the
areas they are weak in. Study skills for kids goes beyond the purview of
mere academics, as they have to learn so much about everything. They
have to learn how to get along with others, how to manage time, how to
tackle the difficulties they encounter, and how to tackle tests and
exams. Integrate and extend learning beyond the classroom and the kids
will enjoy every moment of it. Nature walks, excursions, story telling,
dramatics all these are study skills that kids should inculcate.
Learning by rote should be dispensed with at least in the early stages.
Kids should love to go to school and should look forward to studying.
The aim of all study skills should be just that.
