Since Study skills are skills acquired for the purpose of personal self development or for a good career, the focus of teaching these skills centers around the individual’ academic or personal growth. The basis for success in academics is hard work, disciplined studying and acquiring the ability to critically assess. As time is very precious, time management is crucial. Teaching students to identify work priorities and tackle the right tasks first is important. Setting of personal short-term goals and long-term goals is a first step. With effective scheduling, everything is streamlined. Stress is an inevitable part of academics. With so much to do and such little time to do it in, students often find themselves in a situation where many things need attention. Teaching relaxation techniques and ways to combat stress is something which should be done on a regular basis. Retaining information is another area where students encounter problems. The Use of mnemonic systems, which use imagination, association and location, go a long way in reducing the intensity of the problem of poor memories. Teaching study skills like problem solving and decision-making should be related to real life situations for it to be realistic. Encouraging students to be creative and appreciating innovation motivates students to excel at what they are doing. Teaching them to plan projects inculcates a sense of responsibility and helping them to manage these projects infuses a sense of accountability. Communication is important in whatever the student undertakes and these study skills should be emphasized. Personal development is as important as academic success. Values should be impressed upon them at a very early stage for ethics and the principles that students imbibe hold them together when the chips are down. The molding of an individual determines what he or she becomes and growing up right, thinking straight and cultivating principles like loyalty and integrity must be drilled into the students time and time again. The teacher should instill
in the students a sense of commitment and dedication and the ability to
take failure and success in their stride. Strength of character, and a
positive attitude should be built on a strong foundation. The teacher is
an important tool in this building process. A good teacher is able to
impart the right study skills and in the process create a good
individual. There is no gainsaying the fact that teaching study skills
is of prime importance and needs to be imparted properly for students to
be able to withstand the onslaught of life and nature. ~ Author M. Hemdev data(c)Indian child. all rights reserved. Back to study articles > teaching reading study skills teaching study skills study skills for kids middle school study skills study habits |
