Depression is a compilation of many
properties. These could be a basic trait in an individual that is facing
threat or a strong external influence. Depression can be temporary but
has to be treated at the bud stage so that it does not depress the
possibilities of recuperation. Effective time management, new skill
acquiring and general routine punctuality as some of the self cures for
combating with depression. Depression can strike at any age and the
causes of teen depression are very individualistic.
Teenage depression is not a disease but a phase which hits all
teenagers. Owing to the sudden bodily changes, thinking or perception,
the teenager of today is constantly facing the need to upgrade his
interactive skills. For teenagers who are introverts, the problem of
depression may be ignored as people them may brand him as a loner. But
there are many reasons that go to add to depression like an unsuccessful
attempt at a competitive skill test or a lost game at rugby.
Children also face depression when they are forced into activities which
are contrary to their liking. Force feeding also causes depression in
toddlers which results in picky eaters. The cause may be external or a
certain pressure must be building in the teenager to cope up with the
pressures of the world. Depression signals are sudden loss of interest
in activity be it a puzzle or a game on computer. Another sign is
compulsive habit of cleaning or assuring an impeccable ambience.
The root cause of depression in teenage is expectation. The teens these
days have opportunities, base and also a firm background that makes them
performers right from a keen age. These performers need backing and
support to help them understand their own skills and overcome their
inefficiencies. They require education on skills and comfort when they
under achieve. Constant nagging or peer pressure can leave a teenager
depression.
Teen infatuation or failure in love can be a serious problem. Most
parents ignore or reprimand a teenager who has been unrequited in love.
This can be disastrous often driving the teenager into bouts of anger
display, self abuse or inflicting abuses on their loved ones. Comparison
also leads to depression though the silent expression can be sadness,
bulimia or reduced eating habits.
Parents also complain of their teen girl child who is addicted to a self
image. Each time they fail to be appreciated in public or among their
teen group they lose a part of themselves. Here a correction is required
that living in fancy must be avoided. Though it a privilege to have a
car, the importance of public transport also adds value to growth.
Empowering teenagers is also a cure or way to avoid depression. The
causes of depression can be subtle or expressive but the constant need
to accept a situation is also challenging the teenager. All is won with
love and compassion and that is enough for a teenager from his or her
parents and family. Author Parenting expert, Kamakshi Gupte.
