Teething baby problems

Cranky babies are difficult to handle and one advise to mothers is ‘loads of patience’. Also arrange for a care giver, as caring continuously for a baby might add up to the stress along with physical exertion. Teething is a tiring phase for the baby and soon it will be a time for smiles, cameras and pride for all at home as one gets to see the sneaking pearly whites.

Babies sometimes are lucky and do not face any problems while teething. Low grade fever, less sleep, awaking several times at night, refusing food are the common problems for teething babies. This is also a good time to try out new nutritious recipes that will interest your baby. Feeding surely is a problem and one could try feeding the baby in a stroller, in the courtyard or the window sill.

As kids are constantly chewing and gnawing whatever is available they ingest bacteria which may cause diarrhea. Mild dosage of medicines under the prescription of the doctor may seem necessary. Teething times are tough times, but will be over soon. By the time your baby is 2 years old, she will have 20 teeth. If any of these teeth are decayed, your child may have what dentists describe as, "nursing bottle mouth." Bacteria in your baby's mouth reacts with sugar to make acid.  While the baby sleeps, more acid stays on her teeth to cause cavities in them. So your doctor may suggest not to give the baby a bedtime bottle. If a bottle is given at night, unsweetened, boiled water may be the best for teething babies. Decayed teeth make it difficult for the baby to eat harder foods which are needed for good health. The baby may stop eating well, or stay on soft foods for too long.

If the baby teeth are removed prematurely due to tooth decay, the remaining teeth may take up the space where the adult teeth were meant to come through. This may in turn lead to teeth getting overcrowded and the need for expensive dental treatment later. Baby teeth help keep space open in the mouth so adult teeth aren't crowded. You can care for baby's teeth by providing your child a balanced & sensible diet and regularly wiping her teeth with a clean gauze or pad after your baby's meal.

You don't need toothpaste. Simply wiping the surfaces of the teeth with a clean face washer every day may be enough. After about 12 months, use a soft baby brush (without toothpaste) to clean twice daily, if possible. Ask your chemist for a low fluoride toothpaste specially for babies.
