running service in New Delhi and Bombay; some basic telephone services opened to
private-sector competition in 1994 - telephone line density only 0.7 per 100
persons in 1994, among lowest of major nations of Asia. The telecom industry in
India or the DoT was separated from the post and telegraph department. This

India. Revenue in telecom industry is growing at a fast rate. The directives
from the Department of Telecom is getting strict so as to curb illegal service
providers. This is a growing sector and important as this offers easy access to
one and all. The WiMax and 3G technology promises of a more interesting future
in India.
Submarine cables link India to Malaysia and United Arab Emirates. Paging, cellular phone service, and electronic mail being introduced. Government-owned radio (Akashvani) and television (Doordarshan) networks with extensive national and local coverage; private-sector television networks via cable and satellite becoming prolific.
