TELECOMMUNICATIONS IN INDIA  

National system controlled by government, with public corporations running service in New Delhi and Bombay; some basic telephone services opened to private-sector competition in 1994 - telephone line density only 0.7 per 100 persons in 1994, among lowest of major nations of Asia. The telecom industry in India or the DoT was separated from the post and telegraph department. This itself sparked a change in the character of viewing communications and paving a new way for telephonic communications. Mobiles are slowly replacing land lines. The wireless connections in India have grown to a large extent in the past decade. The penetration level of the communication is effective with remote villages receiving the benefits of cellular service.

The introduction to mobile phones in India was at a premium level as the rates were high. The mobile service industry has made several efforts to make the charge affordable at very low rates. The companies also offer schemes and combination offers which keeps the customer interested. Service provides are improving and innovating their service to have and edge amongst other competitors.

The ‘next generation’ level is concentrated on optical fiber network through the Internet protocol. This will further enhance the telecommunication set up in India. Revenue in telecom industry is growing at a fast rate. The directives from the Department of Telecom is getting strict so as to curb illegal service providers. This is a growing sector and important as this offers easy access to one and all. The WiMax and 3G technology promises of a more interesting future in India.

Submarine cables link India to Malaysia and United Arab Emirates. Paging, cellular phone service, and electronic mail being introduced. Government-owned radio (Akashvani) and television (Doordarshan) networks with extensive national and local coverage; private-sector television networks via cable and satellite becoming prolific.
