THE OLD TESTAMENT
The books of the Old Testament fall into 4 main
sections:-
(1) THE BOOKS OF MOSES
The first book is called Genesis, which means the
beginning. It tells us about God's dealings with the first men on the
earth. Then follow Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers & Deuteronomy. They tell
how God called Abraham, made a covenant with him and with his descendants,
brought them out of Egypt and gave them the land now called Israel.
(2) THE HISTORICAL BOOKS
These, from the Book of Joshua to the Book of Esther, are a
record of the history of the Israelites (or Jews) and of God's dealings
with them.
(3) THE POETIC BOOKS
The books of Job, the Psalms, the Proverbs, Ecclesiastes
and the Song of Songs were written in Hebrew (the language of the
Israelites) in poetic form. They contain much important teaching about the
ways of God and the feelings and duties of man.

THE NEW TESTAMENT
(1) THE GOSPEL RECORDS
These are four separate accounts of the life of Christ,
written by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John; each is telling the gospel (the
good news) in his own way
(2) THE BOOK CALLED “THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES”
This was written by Luke and tells what happened after
Jesus Christ was risen from the dead. We are told how the first churches
were formed as the apostles carried the good news throughout the Roman
Empire.
(3) THE LETTERS
These were written by some of the apostles to help the
early believers in the small, scattered, young churches.
(4) THE BOOK OF REVELATION
This was the last message of Jesus, given in vision to the
Apostle John.

The Dead Sea Scrolls Between 1947 and 1956 thousands of fragments of biblical and early Jewish documents were discovered in eleven caves near the site of Khirbet Qumran on the shores of the Dead Sea. These important texts have revolutionized our understanding of the way the Bible was transmitted, and have illuminated the general cultural and religious background of ancient Palestine, out of which both Rabbinic Judaism and Christianity arose. Since their discovery nearly half a century ago, the scrolls and the identity of the nearby settlement have been the object of great scholarly and public interest, as well as heated debate and controversy. Why were the scrolls hidden in the caves? Who placed them there? Who lived in Qumran? Were its inhabitants responsible for the scrolls and their presence in the caves? Of what significance are the scrolls to Judaism and Christianity? The Dead Sea Scrolls, which date back to the events described in the New Testament, have added to our understanding of the Jewish background of Christianity. Scholars have pointed to similarities between beliefs and practices outlined in the Qumran literature and those of early Christians. These parallels include comparable rituals of baptism, communal meals, and property. Most interesting is the parallel organizational structures: the sectarians divided themselves into twelve tribes led by twelve chiefs, similar to the structure of the early Church, with twelve apostles who, according to Jesus, would to sit on twelve thrones to judge the twelve tribes of Israel. Many scholars believe that the literature of Qumran and the early Christian teachings stem from a common stream within Judaism and do not reflect a direct link between the Qumran community and the early Christians. |
