Catholic Church wedding
|
|
As every religion has a sanctified place the Catholics have their
spiritual altar in the church. It is here that everyday the daily bread
of life is received and the most important sacraments are taken. One of
the sacraments being matrimony i.e. marriage in regular parlance is
conducted in church at the sacred alter. The Catholic Church wedding consists of the biblical readings, exchange of vows, nuptial blessing, exchange of rings, prayer of the faithful and the choir. The wedding takes place in the midst of family and friends and everyone present is encouraged to partake in the liturgy service and shower their blessings on the couple. The wedding mass is celebrated at a different time apart from the regular masses. Hence the couple have to inform the priest in advance about their marriage. Wedding masses are never celebrated on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. These are the sacred days of Jesus Christ and are meant only for prayers. The mass is normally within the premises of the Church and a day selected by the couple in consent with the priest. According to tradition the mass is usually celebrated in the girl’s parish. Being in India, inter-caste marriages are common. Hence prior to the wedding there are a few legalities that the couple have to approve of. Firstly if one in the couple is a non-Catholic then the priest has a talk to the couple as to their understanding of the future consequences. For instance what will be the religion of the child. Living in society and more serious talk. If the priest feels that the couple is prepared then he gives his consent. However he can always withhold his consent and refuse the couple. In India the priest usually consents the bishop his superior before he passes any grave judgement. Hence the couple have to go through a full-fledged marriage preparation course before they actually take the vows. Catholic weddings brings together a couple who are ready to live with each other for the rest of their lives. The rings are symbolic to their testimony and the church the pivot to their wedding sacrament. ~ author Karishma Bajaj.
