Divorce

Divorce is defined as a legal ending of marriage. According to the Hindu Law, marriage is the most beautiful relationship shared between two unknown souls. It unites the body and soul of two people in a way that even whispers are not heard in the stillness around. But sadly the beauty of this relationship is lost in the wind of modernization, westernization, and globalization. The difference of opinions, different visions, lack of understanding, difference in attitude and behavioral patterns, the feeling of ‘Me’, and non-acceptance of faults and mistakes – are all major causes of a divorce. With all these factors the unity of two souls is eventually shattered into two different identities.

In the earlier days there were no women to even give a thought over having a divorce but these days it has become very common especially in the urban areas. Women of today are becoming self-dependent and so they don’t accept the torture and pain of the in-laws or the husband. In their own ways they protest the matter and when things go beyond the level of tolerance, the marriage ends up in divorce. Over the period of time the strength and intimacy of a wedded life has changed drastically.

Besides all this modernization and westernization, there is one thing that has not changed and that’s the atrocities committed against women. If there is a divorce then the society puts the entire blame on the shoulders of a woman. Society disapproval is stronger for divorced women that leave a great mark on their emotional, mental, and psychological well-being. The community rejects her entry in any festive occasion or at any wedding party because people strongly feel that such a woman is a curse to the society. They feel that their entry in such occasion will spoil the mood of the ceremony as well as hamper the joyful life of the newly wedded couple. Why don’t the community and the society understand that even for them it’s a great loss, a never-ending pain that slowly destabilizes their lives as well as the lives of their natal family? With each passing day such women have to deal with grief, pain, suffering, threat, and depression. Why give them more pain and suffering by rejecting and disapproving them?

There are many more problems and sufferings for divorced women in the social circle. The saddest aspect of their life is that even their natal family disapproves their decision and sometimes even refuses to accept them back in their family. Under such a situation, a woman is forced to live an individual life and in due course she faces lots of financial crisis as well. If she has kids then she is completely under heavy pressure to bear the education and other basic requirement of her children. At times she is not even able to meet the basic food needs of herself and her children. It’s so distressing to know that she is completely thrown out of the house, out of the family, and out of the society to live a life in hell.

The worst scenario is an incident that often takes place with a divorced women and that’s the violation of her dignity. It’s true that men have their eyes on such discarded women and are often seen as a commodity of sexual harassment and physical abuse. How smartly men get out of this disaster but women are left with an unpleasant environment. Why is there so much of gender-bias? Will it be right to say that in case of a divorce women are faulty? NO! Then why they are treated in a different and distressing manner? When a man is guilty of breaking the relationship then the woman should be escaped from rejection and disgrace. Anyone can be faulty in case of divorce then both the gender should be treated equally after the divorce.
