Maternal mortality is defined as the death of women when pregnant or after pregnancy termination. Sadly, every minute one woman in our country dies as a result of pregnancy or child birth. Shockingly, there is a heavy loss of women every year in India. According to the WHO report about 136,000 maternal deaths take place annually. It is also said that the rate of maternal mortality in the country is the highest in the world.
The entire life of a woman plays an important role in the development and growth of the offspring within the womb. Be it a girl or boy, womb needs extra nutrition and care to deliver a healthy baby and maintain the health of the mother as well. Women needs good nutrition and a healthy atmosphere to maintain the joyfulness of their life as well as the life of people related to them. When pregnant a woman needs good and adequate nutrition to keep herself and her offspring healthy. If there is lack of nutrition during those months or even throughout her life span, then the risk of deaths or severe complications in child birth is higher. It is really difficult to fight with this issue as it is a severe health issue wherein females don’t even have the right to proper and adequate nutrition. Though in big cities and towns females get to eat what they want and desire but in villages and small towns they are deprived of this basic necessity of living. This is definitely a matter of social injustice and violation against women rather than a health issue.
Apart form this there are other causes as well that significantly contribute to the increasing rate of maternal deaths. Lack of proper medical facility, improper treatment, ignorance of right food habits, and lack of health care lays a major difference on the health of expecting mothers. There are many women who don’t seek the right antenatal care and some are treated by inexperienced doctors. Both these factors also trigger the rate of maternal mortality in the country. According to the National Family Health Survey it is reported that about 42% of deliveries are unattended by trained doctors, only 34% of the women enjoy the privilege of being in the right hands in terms of health care facility and medical professionals.
Isn’t this a shame for our country? Every year high number of women deaths is occurring and the country is losing its control over this shameless situation. There are many ways to combat the issue and create a healthier environment for women to live in. Good education, adequate nutrition, public awareness, and enough health care facilities to treat one and all are some ways to subside the rate. Apart from that strict action needs to be taken by the government to prohibit all the violation against women that is directly or indirectly triggering the cause of maternal mortality.
