narrative essay

Narrative essays are just what the word “ narrative” indicates. When you narrate a story or an incident it can be associated with an ordinary everyday experience or a personal experience in the form of a short story. Narrative essays are a way of delving into our memories, extracting ideas, exploring and sharing such information with the reader. The difference between narrative writing and descriptive writing is that the former has a more personal approach.

What is difficult about narrative writing is that there are so many memories blending into one another that it takes time to isolate the ones related to the particular subject on hand. As a result it takes more than a couple of drafts for the final product to be produced.

The initial process of writing is always difficult as you have to come up with “reader worthy” incident, then extract only those thoughts associated with it and finally convert it into a product attractive enough and compelling enough to sustain the reader. It is important for the writer to introduce an aspect of realism into the writing.

Like any other piece of writing, it is important to keep in mind that the reader should be involved. Rather than merely relate the incident it is essential to do some creative writing to keep a hold on the reader. It is so easy to lose grip. Something personal to the writer need not always have meaning for the reader. To encompass them the writer should resort to generalization in the beginning.  This helps to identify at least a section of readers of a particular age group or a particular background. The very fact that it is a story makes it more imperative to support it adequately with details that buttress all ideas and thoughts. Like a story it should have a plot, characters and the climax that is the crux. Either the first person or the third person can be used. As any personal experience can be dubbed as a narrative essay, almost anything can be written on any topic personal to you. You as the writer are master and can dictate whatever you want to say in any matter that you choose to. Right from how you got lost, how you flunked an important exam to how you succeeded in life can be clubbed as topics worthy of narration.

Writing, then reading what is written and rewriting it can convert an ordinary essay into a sublime piece of literary art. Every time the narrative essay undergoes a transformation, it improves.

Using appropriate words and relevant verbs and adjectives converts an insipid narration into a compelling one.
The narrative essay nearly always begins with a general statement and forms the introduction to the heart of the essay.

Emotions should be conveyed properly so that the writer’s fears or emotions come through. Before concluding, the writer reflects on the larger notion behind writing and drives home the point that the writer wants the readers to relate to.

Dialogues and anecdotes lend the personal touch and make the writer seem as human as the reader. Once all this is done have your essay read out to you. When you listen to what you have written, it is easy to find what you have to rectify. ~ author M. Doraiswami
