writing a narrative essay

Writing is a daunting task especially when you face the blank page before you and just do not know where to begin. While writing a narrative essay, as it is more or less a personal experience, start off with the ubiquitous “I”. Seeing this on a blank page is very powerful. Continue to use I stating whatever you want to in any haphazard manner. The aim is to get something down on paper. This is called as freewheeling writing. Once this is done shape your thoughts and say exactly what you want to say.

Strangely, even as you write, you will find your mind working overtime with all ideas coming at once. If this does not work, back off, and let things alone for a while. Forget what you wanted to do and listen to music or go for a stroll--- anything to distract you from the arduous task at hand. Unconsciously the mind delves deeper than the surface, explores all areas and comes forth with thoughts and ideas related and unrelated to the topic at hand. Jot these down and you will find that you actually have quite a lot. If all this fails to help, read essays that have been written. The more you read, the better you can write. Arm yourself, and go ahead and write with that pen of yours. Before you known it the incident is written with a personal flourish.

Before commencing to write a narrative essay, try and direct its route. As writing is a figment of your imagination, let your ideas flow. It helps to brainstorm-- directing where you want your narrative to go. Starting with the main idea, draw lines in different directions. At the end of each line let there be a descriptive word. As these lines branch, many words evolve and with it a thread of thought. Choose the threads that you like best, using grammar and syntax as your aids. Think small and you will soon have more than you can actually tackle.

Ensure that the narrative essay has a clear introduction and a conclusion that is suggestive. Include as many anecdotes as you can, and a little dialogue with correct punctuation. At the end of it the reader must get the feeling of having read something that is valuable to the realm of human experience. Create an air of intimacy with the reader and use a style that is animated and lively. Use novel ways to describe mundane and ordinary things. Once the basic stuff is written, all it needs is polish and gloss. Write and rewrite until you are satisfied that you have got your reader hooked.

See that the transition is perfect and the paragraphs blend into one another. Vary the structure of the sentences and do not make the mistake of assuming the reader got the point. This is why the conclusion is very important. Use active verbs and words that by themselves conjure the vision you intend to portray.

These last few sentences should be categorically authoritative and powerful. Proofread your work and with a magical wave of words and phrases impress the reader. ~ author M. Doraiswami
